I was playing bridge once at a club in Lawrence, Kansas. As I dealt the first hand, East asked me, “So, what do you do?” I allowed as how, “I teach up at the University,” because I knew what was coming next. “Really? What subject?” she of course asked. “Mathematics,” sez I. “Oh, dear, I always hated math,” sez she. We finished the hand and I turned to her: “And what do you do?” She shuffled the cards and said, “I work up at the gerontology clinic.” “No kidding!” sez I, “That’s interesting. I’ve always hated old people.”
