Infrastructure for a small field

Commutative algebra is a community of manageable size, which means the conferences, journals, and websites it runs on are largely built by the people who use them.

From 2001 to 2021 I was co-founder, designer, and co-webmaster of commalg.org, with Moira McDermott and Keri Sather-Wagstaff: a clearing house of conference announcements, news, and links for the commutative algebra community, from an era when such a thing had to be built by hand.

Editorial work

At Syracuse

Chair of the Department of Mathematics from 2020 until June 2026, following five years as Associate Chair for Graduate Affairs and a year as Associate Chair for Undergraduate Affairs. I co-edit the departmental newsletter with Leonid Kovalev, and for fifteen years looked after the department’s website and social media. I have served on the University Senate’s committees for Services to Faculty and Staff, the Libraries, and Research and Creative Scholarship.

Earlier: colloquium chair (and, for two years, colloquium czar), chair of the graduate committee, first-year advisor for the College of Arts and Sciences, the College curriculum committee, and departmental liaison for the 2005 redesign of the mathematics website. I edit the department’s newsletter, The Archimedean.

Also, at various times, faculty advisor to the SU Club Soccer team and the SU Bowling Club, and a member of the organizing committee for Café Scientifique Syracuse.

Further back

In 2005 I was a main lecturer, with Srikanth Iyengar, Anton Leykin, Claudia Miller, Ezra Miller, and Uli Walther, at the Snowbird Summer School in Commutative Algebra. In 2002 I was speaker’s assistant to Mel Hochster at the introductory workshop opening the MSRI special year in commutative algebra. As a graduate student at Nebraska I chaired the Graduate Student Advisory Board and organized the graduate student seminar.
